Best time to visit Rwanda for Nyungwe
Rwanda has two rainy seasons and one main dry season. Rain peaks from March to May and again from September to December, and the second wet period is centered on October to December. June to August is the main dry season of the country. These are national patterns, and no month promises a rain-free walk in a forest that sits between 1,480 and 2,950 m.
Plan your trip around activities rather than the calendar. The Nyungwe canopy walk runs through the year, and chimpanzee trekking has no month that guarantees a sighting. What the seasons change is how muddy the paths are and how much you will want a jacket.

The seasons at a glance
What to expect and how to plan.
| Period | What to expect | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | First rainy season, rain at its heaviest | Muddy and slippery paths. Bring boots and a rain jacket |
| June to August | Main dry season of the country | The easiest months for walking. Showers can still happen |
| September to December | Second rainy season, strongest from about October to December | Plan walks for the morning and keep a spare day |
January and February sit between the two wet periods. Treat them like any other month and pack for rain. For most visitors, June to August is the best time for Nyungwe. The rainy months still work well with a jacket, early starts and a plan that has some slack.

Rain in the forest: what it means for your days
How the weather touches each activity.
Canopy walk
Rain is more likely in the afternoon, so go in the morning if you can. After rain, paths to the bridge are slippery and muddy. The walk from the Uwinka centre to the bridge takes about 1 hour on foot.
Primate tracking
The animals live in the forest in dry and wet weather alike. A wet day mostly means a muddy walk, and your guide can tell you what is planned on the day. See primates in Nyungwe for what to look for.
Hiking
Walks are guided. Long routes such as Bigugu (13.2 km) are more comfortable in drier spells, while shorter paths such as Igishigishigi (2.1 km) work in any weather. See hiking in Nyungwe.
What to pack
A light rain jacket, shoes with grip and a warm layer. Boots and rain gear can also be borrowed at the park.
The second rainy season, September to December
The second wet period runs from September to December and is centered on October to December. Paths are at their muddiest then, so keep a spare day in your plan and ask your guide how the paths are on the day.
In a rainforest showers can come in any month. A light jacket, shoes with grip and an early start matter more than the exact month.

Nyungwe weather by place
The forest and the lake are not the same.
Temperatures change little between seasons, and the higher ground is cooler. The forest and the shore of Lake Kivu at Rusizi lie at different heights, so do not expect the same weather at both. If you split your trip, check Rusizi and Kamembe separately, and use our stay guide to pick a base that suits your plans.

Sample plans by season
Adjust the same trip to the weather.
Dry season trip
June to August suits a longer hike with the Bigugu route or a multi-day walk. Pack a light jacket anyway, because showers do not respect the calendar.
Rainy season trip
March to May and September to December suit shorter activities: a morning canopy walk, one primate tracking and a tea visit. Keep a spare day for a wet spell.
Short stay
With only one or two days, pick the activity that matters most and book it for the morning. Add a second activity only if the weather cooperates.
