The Nile source in Nyungwe
Nyungwe feeds two of Africa's great river systems. Some streams run west into the Congo basin, others drain toward the Nile. That split is the reason the forest keeps turning up in the search for the Nile's farthest source, and it is also why two springs a short distance apart can lead to very different places.
Nyungwe counts among the most distant headwater regions of the Nile, and a sign in the forest has marked a source point since 2006. Where exactly the Nile begins is not settled for good, because it depends on how the start of a river is defined and how the headwaters are measured. What is clear is the route: the headwaters are in Nyungwe, and the water runs through Rwanda to Lake Victoria.

What is clear and what is open
A short guide to the question.
Clear
Nyungwe's streams reach both the Congo and the Nile systems. Two Nile source points are marked in the forest, called Kandt's source of the Nile and Source of the Nile. The Nile-bound streams run on through Rwanda toward Lake Victoria.
The sign since 2006
In March 2006 a team used GPS to place the farthest source of the Nile in Nyungwe, and a sign has marked the point since. Other origins in Rwanda and Burundi are named as well, so the sign is a landmark, not proof of where a river begins.
Measurements in 2026
Measurements in February 2026 suggest that the signed spot drains south and west, into Lake Kivu and the Congo, and link a different stream, tied to the explorer Kandt, to the Nile. The exact starting stream is therefore still being worked out.
What it means for you
Do not travel to Nyungwe for a single spot. Come for the forest, chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walk and the hikes, and treat the Nile story as the background to those walks.

From the headwaters to Lake Victoria
The route of the Nile water that starts in Nyungwe.
1. Headwater streams
The streams in the forest, with names such as Rukarara that are written in several ways, start the journey.
2. Nyabarongo
The streams join the Nyabarongo, a major river of Rwanda.
3. Ruvubu
The Nyabarongo meets the Ruvubu.
4. Kagera
Together they form the Kagera.
5. Lake Victoria
The Kagera flows into Lake Victoria, the lake that feeds the White Nile.
The total length of the Nile depends on where you place its start, so figures differ.
Nyungwe or Jinja
Two different answers to a different question.
| Nyungwe | Jinja, Uganda | |
|---|---|---|
| The question | Where is the farthest headwater stream? | Where does the river leave Lake Victoria? |
| Status | Open, depends on the measurement | The long accepted origin of the White Nile |
| What you see | Rainforest, hills and guided walks | The river at the lake outflow |
The two places do not compete. One is the farthest tributary, the other is the point where the lake becomes a river. If you want the river story at the lake, see the Source of the Nile at Jinja. For most travelers, Nyungwe is the better stop for forest, and Jinja the better stop for the river.
Visiting the source area
What to ask before you go.
Both marked points lie in the forest, where all walks are guided and you may not leave the paths. A free walk to either point is not something to plan on. Ask the park team at a visitor centre what access exists, how long the walk takes and who guides it, and do this before you build a day around it. The hiking guide lists the paths that are open to visitors: see hiking in Nyungwe.
Three ways to define a river's start
Why the answer depends on the question.
The farthest stream
Measure along the water and pick the headwater that is farthest from the sea. This is the definition behind the source points in Nyungwe, and small errors in the measurement can move the answer from one stream to another.
The lake outflow
Take the place where the river leaves Lake Victoria. This is the origin that was accepted for a long time, and it is the point visitors see in Jinja.
The longest path
Count the full course of the longest tributary. It depends on which streams count as the main river, so the numbers differ between teams.
None of the three is wrong, and each gives a different place. The sign in the forest is one answer among several.
Nile source in Nyungwe: frequently asked questions
Is Nyungwe the source of the Nile?
Nyungwe is one of the most distant headwater regions of the Nile. Where exactly the Nile begins is not settled for good, because it depends on how the start of a river is defined.
Can I walk to the source of the Nile in Nyungwe?
All walks in the park are guided. Ask the park team what access exists to the source area before you plan, and do not count on a standard tour.
Is this the same as the Source of the Nile in Jinja?
No. Jinja marks the place where the White Nile leaves Lake Victoria. Nyungwe is about the farthest headwater streams. They answer different questions.
How far apart are the two source points?
About 12 km separate the two marked Nile source points in the forest.
Which river systems does Nyungwe feed?
Both the Nile and the Congo. Some streams run west into the Congo basin, others drain toward the Nile.
