Rwanda birds in Nyungwe

Nyungwe has between 317 and 345 bird species, and about 30 of them are Albertine Rift endemics. That makes the forest a serious birding destination. A guide is required on every walk, and a guided birding walk is a separate paid activity.

Birding fits well beside the primate programme. If you already plan chimpanzee trekking, add a morning on the paths and ask your guide to focus on birds.

Albertine Rift endemics: what the word means

And the birds that make the list.

An endemic of the region

An Albertine Rift endemic lives only in the mountains and forests along the western arm of the East African Rift. That does not mean it lives only in Nyungwe or only in Rwanda. The same species can turn up in neighboring countries.

Birds to look for

Birds to look for in this forest include the Red-collared Babbler, Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Nightjar, Grauer's Swamp Warbler, Regal Sunbird and Blue-headed Sunbird. Having a bird on the list is not a promise to see it.

A habitat to know

Grauer's Swamp Warbler is tied to the Kamiranzovu swamp. The swamp path called Kamiranzovu is 3.92 km on the park map, and it is separate from the Kamiranzovu waterfall route of 6.5 km.

Guided birding: how to plan it

Birding walks use the same paths as the hiking trails. Early starts usually suit birding, so ask for the earliest start the park team allows. Bring binoculars, a rain jacket and shoes with grip, because paths turn muddy after rain.

Be clear with your guide about what you want. A walk for endemics goes slowly and stops often, while a primate walk keeps moving. If you try to do both at once, the walk suits neither goal.

Our Nyungwe hiking trails page lists the lengths of each path, from the 2.1 km Igishigishigi trail to the long Bigugu route.

Which walk for which birder

Three ways to build your time in the forest.

PlanWhat you doFee for international visitors
One birding morningGuided birding walk on a trail near your base$40 plus park entry
Birds and primatesBirding walk on one day, colobus tracking on another$40 each, plus park entry
A full forest stayBirding, canopy walk and a swamp or waterfall path over several daysPark entry for the nights, $40 per activity

For most visitors with only one day to spare, the single birding morning is enough to see why the forest matters. Birders with more time get better results by spreading walks over two or three mornings, since weather and luck change between days.

Park entry for an international adult is $100 for one night, with the 2025โ€“2026 tariff. Check the current amount before you book. The park fees page has the full table.

Around the forest edge

Birds do not stop at the park boundary. The forest edge near Gisakura and Kitabi is tea country, and you can combine birding with a visit to the Nyungwe tea plantations.

Savanna birds in the east of Rwanda are a different set of species. Read about the wildlife of Akagera if you plan to go there. For mountain birds, Nyungwe is the place to choose.

Paths for birding

Mapped lengths of paths that visitors use.

PathMapped lengthNote
Buhoro1.8 kmShort path on the park map
Igishigishigi2.1 kmShortest variant, linked to the canopy bridge
Kamiranzovu swamp path3.92 kmSwamp habitat, not the waterfall route
Umuyove5.5 kmAlso spelled Umoyove

Lengths are the mapped values and not a promise of walking time. For most birders, a short path walked slowly beats a long path walked fast. Pick the one your guide recommends for the day.

Birds in Nyungwe: frequently asked questions

How many bird species live in Nyungwe?

Between 317 and 345 species. About 30 of them are Albertine Rift endemics.

Do I need a guide for birdwatching?

Yes. Walks in Nyungwe are guided, and you may not leave the paths. A guided birding walk costs $40 per person for international visitors, with park entry extra.

Are all Albertine Rift endemics found only in Rwanda?

No. The word means the birds are restricted to the Albertine Rift region, which spans several countries. Some of the species on Nyungwe's list also live in neighboring forests.

Which bird should I look for first?

Ask your guide what is active that day. The Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin and the two sunbirds are among the birds to look for in Nyungwe, but no sighting can be promised.

Is birding included in the park entry?

No. Park entry is charged per night, and a guided birding walk is $40 per person on top for international visitors (tariff 2025โ€“2026).
