Kigali to Nyungwe: the main options
Most visitors drive from Kigali, along the road through Huye to the forest. The distance is roughly 225 km, and the drive takes 5 to 6 hours. You can also fly from Kigali to Kamembe on the western side, or book a helicopter transfer. If you would rather not organize the trip yourself, see Nyungwe tours from Kigali.
All times here are planning values, not promises. Traffic, rain and road works change them, so leave room in your plan.

Ways to get there compared
Pick by time, budget and how much of the drive you want to see.
| Option | Planning value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Road via Huye | About 225 km, 5 to 6 hours | Kigali to Uwinka is about 213 km and Kigali to Gisakura about 234 km, both also 5 to 6 hours |
| Flight to Kamembe | About 40 minutes | Then about 1 hour by road to Gisakura and 1.5 hours to Uwinka; read the border advice first |
| Helicopter | About 30 minutes from Kigali | Domestic transfers exist; price and landing point must be arranged |
| Bus | โ | Check the current timetable; do not count on a stop in the forest |
For most visitors, a private car or driver on the road via Huye is the simplest, because you control the start time and can stop in Huye. Choose the flight only if the time saved matters more than the border advice and the extra road transfer from Kamembe.

Nyungwe trips from Kigali
Guided trips and transfers to Nyungwe, with live prices and availability.
By road via Huye
One main route, with a good place to break the journey.
The route from Kigali leads south through Huye. From Huye the park entrance in the east is 55 km, and the road runs on through the forest towards Rusizi. Kitabi has not been a park office since 2020.
Because the drive alone takes 5 to 6 hours, sleep near the park if you want an early start for the Canopy Walkway or chimpanzees. Plan to drive in daylight. See Huye (Butare) for a museum stop on the way, and where to stay near Nyungwe for the park bases.
Traffic keeps right. Passing on the left is for overtaking only.

Flight to Kamembe and helicopter
The national airline flies from Kigali (KGL) to Kamembe (KME), and the flight takes about 40 minutes. Check fares and the schedule for your dates.
Kamembe Airport lies in the part of Rusizi District within 10 km of the DR Congo border, for which the UK government advises against non-essential travel (advice of 4 September 2026). Read the advice on Rusizi and Kamembe before you book a flight there.
Helicopter transfers inside Rwanda exist, with about 30 minutes from Kigali as a planning value. Price, landing point and availability have to be requested.

Taxi and transfer from Kigali Airport (KGL)
Taxis, 24 hours a day, at the marked stand.
Airport taxis
Taxis wait at the marked stand outside the arrivals gate, day and night. Fares are not fixed, so agree the price before you get in.
Into the city
The city centre is 10 km from the airport. That is a distance, not a travel time or a bus-station distance.
Onward to Nyungwe
A transfer from the airport to the forest is a long trip of its own and is priced separately. Ask for a quote for the full journey, or book it as part of a tour.
Car rental and parking
Rules and notes for self-drive in 2026.
Licence and daylight
Plan inland drives for daytime. Drivers from Germany need their national licence together with an international licence, so check the rule for your country.
Road type
Many unpaved side roads need a 4x4. The paved main road through Huye is a different matter, and there is no general 4x4 requirement for it.
Forest activities stay guided
Self-drive gets you to the park, not into the forest on your own. Walks, the Canopy Walkway and chimpanzee trekking are guided.
Parking
There is parking at the Uwinka campsite and at the Cyamudongo community centre. Ask on the spot about fees and about leaving luggage in the car.
Buses
Check the current timetable and fare at the station. Do not count on a direct bus from Kigali airport, a stop inside the forest or a same-day return.
Entry and health
Short notes for 2026.
Tourist visa
All nationalities can in principle apply on arrival, and an online application is also possible. A single-entry tourist visa costs $50 for 30 days, a multiple-entry visa $70 for 90 days. Citizens of some countries pay no fee, so check your nationality.
East Africa Tourist Visa
The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 and covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda for 90 days with multiple entries. It does not cover Burundi, the DR Congo or Tanzania.
Yellow fever
No yellow fever certificate is needed for direct entry from Germany. After arriving from a yellow fever area, you need proof of vaccination.
After a stay in the DR Congo
Foreign travelers who were in the DR Congo in the previous 30 days can be refused entry, including in transit.
