Rwanda tours to Nyungwe at a glance
Nyungwe tours usually begin in Kigali. By road the park is about 225 km away, which takes 5 to 6 hours. A flight from Kigali to Kamembe on the western side takes about 40 minutes. Nyungwe tours range from a guided chimpanzee trek or a canopy walk to multi-day trips that add other parks.
Whichever tour you pick, check three things: which activities it includes, whether park entry is part of the price, and where the trip starts. A trip that starts in Kigali spends a large part of the first day on the road, so plan at least one night near the park rather than building the trip around a same-day return.

Ways to reach Nyungwe
Road, flight and helicopter compared.
| Option | Time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Road from Kigali | 5 to 6 hours, about 225 km | Goes via Huye, which lies 55 km east of the park's eastern entrance |
| Flight to Kamembe | About 40 minutes | No fixed fare or daily schedule to rely on; Kamembe is in a border area with its own travel advice |
| Helicopter transfer | About 30 minutes from Kigali | Offered within Rwanda; ask for the price and the landing point |
For most visitors the road with a stop in Huye is the simplest choice. The flight suits travelers with little time who have read the advice for Kamembe first. The details of each route are on the getting there page.
Nyungwe in a longer Rwanda itinerary
The park pairs with other destinations.
With Akagera, the volcanoes and Lake Kivu
The Rwanda Development Board presents Nyungwe together with Akagera, Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu in a multi-day route. Savanna wildlife is covered by Akagera National Park, and mountain gorillas by gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
From the Lake Kivu side
Rusizi and Kamembe form the western gateway to the park. The lake itself is covered by Lake Kivu. Read the travel advice for the border strip before you plan this route.
Rusizi and Kamembe โAdd tea country
Tea estates lie at the edge of the park, at Gisakura on the west side and Gisovu in the north. Visits are arranged in advance.
Tea plantations โNyungwe tours with a hike
The canopy walk is itself reached on a forest trail, and every hike in the park is guided. The trails are listed with their distances.

Short facts for 2026. Check them again before you go.
Visa
Visitors of all nationalities can generally apply on arrival, or online through the government portal. A single-entry tourist visa costs $50 and is valid for 30 days. A multiple-entry visa costs $70 for 90 days. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 for 90 days and covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.
Border rule after the Congo
German travel advice says foreign travelers can be refused entry if they were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the previous 30 days, including in transit. Other rules can apply to foreign residents.
German travel advice
The German Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to the border regions with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It names risks in the Nyungwe area and on the road between Rusizi and Nyamagabe, and asks you to hike only with state-registered guides.
UK and US advice
The UK advises against non-essential travel to parts of Rusizi within 10 km of the Congo border, including Kamembe Airport (advice of 4 September 2026). The US lists Rwanda at Level 3, with a Level 4 strip within 10 km of the border.
Booking a Nyungwe trip
You have more than one route.
The park and the Rwanda Development Board both run their own booking and permit channels, so a tour operator is not the only way in. A package can save planning time, because it combines the transfer, the guide and the activities. The tour cards above show what each trip includes and whether park fees are part of the price. For the amounts, see the park fees page, and for a place to sleep the lodging page.
Nyungwe tours: frequently asked questions
How long should I spend in Nyungwe?
With 5 to 6 hours of driving from Kigali, plan at least one night near the park. Two or three nights let you combine the canopy walk, a forest hike and a chimpanzee trek.
Can I visit Nyungwe from Kigali in one day?
The drive alone takes 5 to 6 hours each way, so a same-day return leaves little time in the forest. Build the trip around an overnight stay.
Is it better to drive or fly?
For most visitors the road via Huye is simpler. The flight to Kamembe is about 40 minutes, but the airport is in a border area with its own advice, and there is no fixed schedule to rely on.
Do I need to book through a tour company?
No. The park and the Rwanda Development Board take bookings directly. A tour can simplify transfers and guides.
Does Nyungwe include gorilla trekking?
No. Gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park in the northwest. Nyungwe offers chimpanzees and other primates.
Do I need a visa for Rwanda?
Most visitors can apply on arrival or online. A single-entry tourist visa costs $50 for 30 days. Rules for people who were recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are stricter, so check your government's advice.
